This Alfredo sauce with Jarlsberg brings a creamy, nutty twist to the classic recipe. The mild, buttery flavor of Jarlsberg cheese melts seamlessly into a smooth and velvety sauce, creating a restaurant-quality dish in minutes. Perfect for pasta, grilled chicken, or vegetables, this sauce is easy to make, versatile, and utterly delicious.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 cup Jarlsberg cheese, freshly shredded
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • ¼ cup reserved pasta water (optional, to adjust consistency)

Optional Add-Ins & Garnishes

  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, for extra cheesiness
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes, for a hint of heat
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon truffle oil, for a gourmet touch

Instructions

  • Melt the Butter & Sauté the Garlic
    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.
    • Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  • Add Cream & Milk
    • Slowly pour in the heavy cream and milk, whisking constantly.
    • Warm the mixture over medium-low heat, but do not let it boil.
  • Melt the Jarlsberg Cheese
    • Reduce the heat to low and gradually add the shredded Jarlsberg, stirring continuously.
    • Whisk until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth and creamy.
  • Season & Adjust Consistency
    • Add salt, black pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Stir well.
    • If the sauce is too thick, add a little reserved pasta water to reach the desired consistency.
  • Serve & Garnish
    • Remove from heat and serve immediately over fettuccine, grilled chicken, or roasted vegetables.
    • Garnish with fresh parsley, extra cheese, or red pepper flakes.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, replace heavy cream with half-and-half or whole milk.
  • For a dairy-free alternative, use cashew cream and plant-based butter.
  • For extra umami, add a splash of white wine while simmering.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat over low heat, stirring in a little milk to restore creaminess.
